Max was initially trained as a civil engineer in Milan and then obtained MPhil and PhD degrees in Planning and GIS from the Universities of Edinburgh and Sheffield respectively. He spent 17 years at the University of Sheffield teaching and researching on geographic information policies, systems, and applications. Since 2005 Max has worked at the Digital Earth and Reference Data Unit in the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Ispra in Italy. The Unit is responsible for the technical coordination of the INSPIRE Directive, aimed at creating an infrastructure for spatial information in Europe. Within the Unit he has been responsible for the development of the INSPIRE Regulation for Metadata, and for research on the impact assessment of SDIs and INSPIRE.
