Student and Early Career Professional Opportunities in RDA

Participation of students and early career professionals within the RDA is tremendously important to us.  Not only does RDA benefit greatly from this diversified and inter-generational community, but engagement with data communities throughout the world also affords this next generation of leadership the opportunity to obtain expertise regarding data infrastructure while becoming well-connected.

Students and early career professionals are welcome to join RDA as an individual member, or apply to participate in one of the following regional Student/Early Career programs:

United States:

Through the RDA-US Data Share Program, RDA was able to engage U.S. students and early career professionals in a monumental way.  Students accepted within the program had the opportunity to participate in RDA’s Working and Interest Groups, under the mentorship of RDA-US Advisory Committee members, as well as attend RDA’s bi-annual Plenaries. The program was piloted from 2014-2015 through funding provided by the National Science Foundation, and due to its success received additional funding from the Sloan Foundation to expand and continue through 2018. The RDA-US hopes to secure funding to continue this program in the future.

Europe:

RDA Europe offers support to Early Career European Researchers & Scientists working with Data to attend the plenary meetings. The aim of this programme is to introduce European early career researchers & scientists to RDA, highlight what data scientists/practitioners are doing, leverage on Early Career Researchers & Scientists knowledge to support Plenary activities and support the Working & Interest group activities.  Learn more about the current edition >>
 

The Research Data Alliance’s vision is Researchers and innovators openly sharing data across technologies, disciplines, and countries to address the grand challenges of society

The Research Data Alliance (RDA) is a community-driven organization whose mission is to develop the social and technical data infrastructure needed to drive innovation surrounding data sharing and data interoperability.  Established in 2013, RDA supports more than 8,900 international members representing 137 countries, has generated 32 concrete outputs [3] (eight of which are recognized as European ICT technical specifications) with over 95 documented adoption cases (Sept 2019).
The Research Data Alliance enables data to be shared across barriers through outputs developed by focused Working Groups and Interest Groups, formed of volunteer experts from around the world and drawn from academia, private sector and government. Participation in RDA is open to anyone who agrees to its guiding principles of openness, consensus, balance, harmonisation, with a community driven and non-profit approach.
RDA has a grass-roots, inclusive approach covering all data lifecycle stages, engaging data producers, users and stewards, addressing data exchange, processing, and storage. It has succeeded in creating the neutral social platform where international research data experts meet to exchange views and to agree on topics including social hurdles on data sharing, education and training challenges, data management plans and certification of data repositories, disciplinary and interdisciplinary interoperability, as well as technological aspects
