A Decade of Data: Celebrating 10 Years of the Research Data Alliance

In 2023 the Research Data Alliance celebrated its 10th Anniversary. We commemorated this important milestone with our community by organising a series of international and regional events and activities that met the following objectives to:

1. Reflect on the past, present and future of the RDA

2. Reinforce our mission, vision and guiding principles

3. Recognise our community members, partners and funders

4. Celebrate the community’s successes with the wider research data community.

10 months to celebrate 10 years of the RDA

Each month of 2023, from February to November, was dedicated to a specific theme related to research data management of relevance to the RDA community. The RDA Secretariat and regional bodies organised various thematic events and activities (e.g., webinars, workshops and podcasts) to meet the objectives detailed above.

Machine Centric Science Podcast on Identifiers The Machine-Centric Science Podcast is about the FAIR principles in practice, for scientists who want to compound their impacts, not their errors. FAIR Data Podcast with Gabriela Meijas Gabriela Meijas, Community Manager at DataCite, talks about her previous and current work. Gabi shares how her journey led to her current role as Community Manager at DataCite. Harmonizing Descriptions of Research Data Repositories The RDA's Data Repository Attributes Working Group has been developing a list of common attributes that can be used to describe data repositories along with examples that showcase different approaches that repositories are taking to express and expose metadata about themselves. The group seeks to improve the discoverability and interoperability of repositories with registries, tools, and other infrastructure related to research data. DDI, FAIR, and the emergent role of active metadata: a CODATA-DDI Alliance webinar for the RDA Decade of Data The DDI community has provided metadata standards and encouraged data reuse for more than two decades among the social, behavioural and economic sciences, public health research, and within the world of official statistics. This workshop describes the key metadata approaches and data management tools they have developed, and how these have changed over time to address the needs of FAIR data sharing, both within and across domain boundaries. Expanding Scholix to support software: your input required The RDA/WDS Scholarly Link Exchange (Scholix) working group has generated a Scholix metadata schema, helped implement this schema in multiple Scholix hubs and other infrastructure providers, and built a community that provides data citation services. The group has been in maintenance mode since 2019 and continues to work on Scholix adoption with repositories, publishers and other industry groups, along with work with the software community over the past year to explore expanding the schema to support software linking and citation. Learning resources minimal metadata application profile The minimal metadata set identifies key characteristics of learning resources that are important for: - content creators and adapters to include with the resources they create - learning resource catalogue and registry service providers - institutions that publish learning resources on their websites to expose when they provide information about the resources in their collections In this 1 hr webinar the Education and Training on Handling of Research Data IG will introduce the application profile of the minimal metadata set and select practitioners will present their implementation of it. Steps towards building interoperability in research tools using PIDs The lack of interoperability between tools presents a significant barrier to streamlining research workflows throughout the research lifecycle. RDA-US: 10th Anniversary Community Meeting The Research Data Alliance (RDA) celebrates its 10-year anniversary this year! RDA-US is using this milestone as an opportunity to celebrate the community of US members who have contributed leadership, support, and ideas to numerous RDA outputs and guidance documents over the decade. The RDA-US community is strong -- representing substantial expertise, experience, and commitment that can serve as a collective voice. In partnership with volunteers and organizations across the world, RDA-US has developed consensus solutions and approaches to research data sharing that have been tested and contextualized in various settings locally and internationally (e.g., policies, approaches, infrastructure architecting, tool requirements). Virtual Research Environments: A Vision for the Next 10 Years   The future for virtual research environments (VREs) warrants exploration as we consider the possibilities that extend well beyond research and high-performance computing into new interfaces, applications and user communities. In this discussion, we look retrospectively at the successes of representative gateways thus far. This serves to highlight existing gaps VREs need to overcome in areas such as accessibility, usability and interoperability, and in the need for broader outreach by drawing insights from technology adoption research. We make the case for the VRE community to be more intentional in engaging with users to encourage adoption and implementation, especially in the area of educational usage. Data Conversations: Working with (big) data sets Open data, open methods, and reproducible and transparent research are increasingly endorsed by funders, publishers, institutions, and learned societies. But what does making your research open, transparent, and reproducible mean in practice? Where can one learn open skills? This edition of the Data Conversations will focus on (big) data sets; of course some of the lessons learned from big data sets are generalisable into RDM best practices. After getting an idea about large datasetis in general, we will get an introduction to Zarr and its community. Zarr let’s you store your large arrays in chunked and compressed manner. Zarr is based on a open specification which enables to have implementations in various programming languages. NetCDF has a convention on top of Zarr specification known as NCZarr, which is implemented in C and Java. The Hugging Face The last ten years have seen machine learning making an increasingly significant impact across all areas of business and society. Machine learning also increasingly plays a role in producing new knowledge across the science and the humanities. The Hugging Face hub is a repository for sharing machine learning models, datasets and demos. It currently has over 150,000 models and 25,000 datasets made openly available for others to use and build on. These models cover a range of tasks, i.e. text classification and modalities, i.e. text, image, audio etc. This hub aims to help democratize access to machine learning. The open science movement has broadened the scope of which scholarly outputs are considered important to emphasize the data and software underpinning research findings. This scope will again need to be expanded to include machine learning models. RDA's Engagement with Disciplines / RDA for Disciplinary Data (A special community cross-fertilisation workshop)  The workshop brings RDA domain ambassadors and disciplinary community groups together to discuss the challenges, solutions and initiatives of working with data in different disciplines. The workshop will describe the findings of an EOSC Future project to understand the factors influencing disciplinary awareness and engagement in the European Open Science Cloud, in particular to develop an understanding of why some communities are not engaged in EOSC. The review will summarize feedback gathered from the RDA membership and other stakeholders on community infrastructure, tools, training materials, and other resources that can be accessed through EOSC. The ARDC Thematic Research Data Commons and CAREful FAIRness This year, the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) shifted away from open calls for projects to focussing on delivering digital research infrastructure through Thematic Research Data Commons (RDC). The new model focuses efforts in domain areas that align with national priorities, researcher demand and concentration, and potential for research translation. Our first RDC is the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) and Indigenous RDC (HASS&I RDC). HASS research data helps us to better understand culture, society and human wellbeing. It helps us understand the past, interpret the world we live in, and imagine the future. For Australia’s Indigenous peoples, data can be transformational, empowering them to tell their own stories and advocate for change. But, the current state of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research data assets leaves them vulnerable to loss, limits data discovery and use, even by traditional owners, and results in the duplication and the over-researching of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The ARDC is known globally as a strong advocate for the FAIR principles. These principles cross-cut all our work. This continues under the thematic RDCs, and we now want to extend this to realising the CARE principles. In implementing these principles, the Research Data Commons needs to collaborate closely with Indigenous communities, Elders, and organisations to co-design policies and practices that are culturally responsive, inclusive, and empowering. Meaningful engagement, capacity building, and community-led initiatives should be central to the commons' operations, ensuring that Indigenous Australians are actively involved in decision-making, benefit sharing, and research outcomes. Indigenous knowledge is potentially relevant to all research domains, and this RDC is an initial step towards demonstrating the value of this approach The HASS&I RDC is our first target for applying both FAIR and CARE principles. We will then carry what we learn into our additional themes of health and medical Research (in our People RDC) and earth and environmental science (in our Planet RDC). The International Workshop on Open Science Identifiers DataCite and Common Science and Technology Resource Identifier (CSTR) are co-organizing an in-person workshop in Beijing, China, bringing together stakeholders in the Open science and research data management communities to explore the role of persistent identifiers (PIDs) in local and global contexts, demonstrate implementation cases, and discuss recent developments in the global PID ecosystem. The workshop will highlight the value of PIDs in the context of PID history and how PID services, tools, and platforms will help to realize the FAIR principle. We will also guide a discussion on the future development trends for PIDs and how to make PIDs more active, stable, and interoperable, with reference to the ongoing PID-related work in the RDA. International Data Week 2023: A Festival of Data, Salzburg The International Science Council’s Committee on Data (CODATA) and World Data System (WDS), and the Research Data Alliance (RDA) are delighted to announce International Data Week 2023: A Festival of Data. IDW 2023 will be hosted by the University of Salzburg, Austria, through its Data Science and Geoinformatics departments, supported by the Governor of Salzburg and with assistance from the Austrian Academy of Sciences - GIScience and the European Umbrella Organization for Geographic Information. The DataCite Metadata Schema Through Time This 1.5 hr training session will trace the history of the DataCite Metadata Schema and how it has evolved over time. In particular, it will focus on the relationship between DataCite and RDA, charting how community consensus and outputs from RDA IGs and WGs have influenced the development of the DataCite Metadata Schema and related services. The session will provide an introduction to the DataCite Metadata Schema and highlight how it facilitates interoperability, with a deeper dive into related identifiers and SCHOLIX, the PID Graph, and persistent identifiers for instruments. The session will also inform how tools can be used to interact with DataCite services. Persistent Identification of Instruments This webinar will discuss Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) and their importance in research and sciences. Rolf Krahl and Markus Stocker will discuss the work of the RDA Persistent Identification of Instruments Working Group and what they did to put PIDs into practice. This interactive webinar will also showcase the integrations between different tools to collect laboratory data, reviewing the Clustermarket and RSpace integration. Lastly, Rory Macneil and Vaida Plankyte will discuss the importance of incorporating PIDs for instruments into research workflows and discuss the future potential. Regional Support to Certification of Data Repositories: A Workshop  CoreTrustSeal (CTS), which was derived from the Recommendations of the RDA Repository Audit and Certification DSA/WDS Partnership Working Group, is well recognised as a community driven, domain agnostic, core certification framework. There are currently more than 160 CTS certified repositories. Those which do not want to apply for certification can usefully assess and improve their practices by examining CTS criteria.  Initiatives at the regional, national, and thematic levels are supporting repositories on their path to CTS certification, and disseminating knowledge about CTS criteria to repositories willing to improve their practices.  This workshop will showcase relevant initiatives, demonstrate how they are organised, the activities involved, and identify good practices. Connecting communities to promote FAIR resources: perspectives from an RDA / EOSC Future Domain Ambassador As part of Allyson's RDA / EOSC Future Ambassadorship, she has launched the FAIRsharing Content & Community Programme, which brings together discipline experts to curate FAIRsharing content and create FAIR educational material. In return, they are attributed for their efforts, gain expertise and become a part of a network of like-minded data enthusiasts that, as a result of the will continue for years to come. This event will highlight the work of these enthusiastic domain experts, and how they have worked to connect their communities with the material and resources they need. Facilitating FAIR practices in research methods, data, and software in Natural and Engineering Sciences – an example from the Dutch landscape This webinar will present the concept of Thematic Digital Competence Centres (TDCCs) within the broader context of RDM landscape in the Netherlands where they were formed. It will focus in more detail on the TDCC for the Natural & Engineering Sciences (TDCC-NES), outlining the 1st year of its existence. TDCC-NES is a national network organisation in the Netherlands that brings together researchers, local DCC’s, infrastructure providers, knowledge and expertise networks, as well as other strategic initiatives within the NES domain. TDCC-NES aims to facilitate researchers to manage data and software in a FAIR manner by identifying bottlenecks and initiating projects to mitigate them. It is funded by NWO, one of the main Dutch research funders, and has links to national Open Science initiatives. The webinar will showcase TDCC-NES network activities, its governance structure, and project programme, including the first funded projects and their expected outcomes. RDM Trainer Networks: Connecting, Collaborating, and Innovating This online event of the ETHRD IG aims to bring together RDM trainers and professionals to strengthen the RDM community, foster collaboration, and promote innovation in research data management education. By facilitating connections and knowledge sharing, this event will contribute to the advancement of effective RDM practices across academia and research institutions. Preliminary agenda: Opening Remarks (5 minutes): Welcome participants and introduce the event's goals and format. Lightning Talks (20 minutes): Invited speakers will deliver brief presentations (5 minutes each) highlighting successful RDM training programs, challenges, and innovations. These talks will set the stage for further discussions. Speed Networking Session (25 minutes): Participants will be randomly paired for 5-minute one-on-one discussions. Each participant will have the opportunity to introduce themselves, share their experiences, and discuss potential collaboration opportunities. This format will encourage a dynamic exchange of ideas. Group Discussions (15 minutes): Participants will be divided into breakout rooms based on specific RDM topics or interests. Each group will discuss key challenges, solutions, and strategies related to their respective topics. Plenary Sharing (~5 minutes): Representatives from each breakout group will share the key takeaways and insights from their discussions with the entire audience. Data Stewardship Webinar and Panel Discussion Join a panel of European and Australasian research support professionals in an interactive panel discussion on what it means to be a Data Steward and the latest opinions and trends in data stewardship. Hosted by ARDC, this online event is part of the 10-year anniversary of Research Data Alliance. It is especially aimed at Australasian professional research support staff, but anyone is welcome to come along to learn and engage with our panel of experts. Community members and group chairs were invited to organise events and activities with or without the support of the RDA Secretariat.

The Secretariat were able to offer support by:

• Creating an event/activity landing page on the RDA website

• Setting up event/activity registration

• Sending event/activity reminders 

• Providing access to the RDA Zoom account & recording

• Providing access to the RDA Mentimeter account

Non-members (external research data management community)

Some organisations elected to organise their own event/activity within a particular month to leverage the enthusiasm and expertise of the global RDA community. Events/activities organised by non-members were promoted as part of the RDA’s 10th Anniversary via all the RDA communication channels.
