I am an oceanographer by training, specializing in plankton ecology and protist taxonomy. I started working in biodiversity informatics and worked on Encyclopedia of Life and Data Conservancy. In addition to my academic appointments at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Arizona State University and the University of Maryland, I am a member of the Ronin Institute and I had my own data management company, The Data Detektiv. Now, I am an Assistant Professor (Sr, Res) at Oregon State University where I work on semantic technology.
