after our meeting in July we are now working to release the new structural implementations of the RDA website, and that's why I am writing. I apology for the long message, I've tried to make it as clear and simple as possible.
The main need we currently have is to ensure proper mapping of the ket assets of our website, i.e. Working & Interest Groups, Recommendations & Outputs, Adoption cases and stories, users, and provide easier access to these assets to the community, according to identified categories which will allow users to understand how RDA can help them. The categories that we have identified so far are Scientific domain of relevance, Technological focus, Geographical dimension (this latter only affects adoption cases, which are associated to organizations, and users).
That said, this is the approach we would like to follow and for which we are asking for your support:
1) Step 1: we are adding to the IGs, WGs, Ouputs and Adoption Stories content types (i.e. that's how the different type of content created on the website are called) a series of compulsory labels to be used as "tags" to then filter the different assets. The suggested labels are:
* Scientific domain. We propose to use the "Fields of R&D classification" as indicated in the Frascati Manual 2015: Guidelines for Collecting and Reporting Data on Research and Experimental Development, Published by the OECD https://warwick.ac.uk/services/ris/systems/dataquality/frascati/frascati.... This list is already in use to map user profiles in the registration form.
* Technological focus. We propose to use the current categories presented in the RDA in a Nutshell overview: Reference and Sharing; Community needs; Data Stewardship and Services; Base Infrastructure
* Geographical dimension. This will apply just to Adoption stories, since we can identify Adopting Organizations, and users. By adding a geographical label in the assets, we will be able to show how, for instance, certain outputs produced by certain WGs have been adopted in which countries / regions. In this case we propose to use the traditional worldwide country list.
* Time reference. We propose to automatize the status of a WG using the classification currently in place: IG established, WG not yet endorsed, WG getting started (0-6 months after endorsement), WG producing deliverables (6-12 months after endorsement), WG wrapping up (12-18 months after endorsement). The idea is to reduce the effort to keep the WG status up to date, with just one manual insertion to be done (WG getting started after endorsement), all the rest being automatically updated following the given timeframes.
Action for you: confirm these criteria or suggest new ones.
2) Step 2: A manual update of all the current assets needs to be done to associate the above mentioned labels to each of these assets. Here we suggest of two ways of doing this:
* An idea could be to divide the assets among ourselves, the WFG, proceed to this mapping and then agree on the final matchings, to be presented to the IGs/WGs chairs.
* A second option is to ask directly the WG chairs to do this activity within their WGs & Recommendations.
Future assets will be automatically cathegorized at their creation (since these labels will be compulsory).
Action for you: let us know if you are aware of any mechanical (i.e. not manual) activity that has already been done in this sense, and to confirm which of the two options you prefer
3) Step 3: visual representation of RDA assets into RDA website. Trust-IT will suggest different ways of presenting the assets, for instance:
* via catalogues with filters which can substitute the current "All recommendations and outputs". "Working Groups" and "Interest Groups" menus as well as the "Adoption cases" menu
* Drop down list of assets to be added to the "RDA for Disciplines" area
* Geographical maps included in the "Adoption stories" menu
* Dynamic maps & charts. In this case we may leverage on activities already done such as this one https://suave-dev.sdsc.edu/main/file=zaslavsk_RDA_Groups__June_2018.csv&..., or the Atlas of Knowledge, providing proper credits to them.
Action for you: contribute with comments and suggestions for the creation of these visual representations.
