Meeting objectives:

The main objective of the meeting is to discuss the future of the IG while providing insights about new development in the field. For this, we will first introduce the group and the current organisation, contributors to the IG will present their ongoing work within the VSSIG and we will discuss the future with the possibility of a new WG about FAIR Semantics. We will then briefly introduce ongoing technological developments relevant to the IG. Finally, we will discuss and collect inputs and feedback that will be useful to define the future of the group including the needs from the community of experts.

  • Sharing technological insights (20 minutes):

    • Content negotiation by profile explained simply (10 minutes)

    • Semantic Mapping: the SEMAF perspective (10 minutes)

  • Gathering community input: What are you struggling with while using semantics? What kind of activities the RDA IG should propose? (25 minutes)

    • Menti meter/Chat/Discussion

Target Audience:

Experts and interested practitioners in

  • Vocabulary services

  • Operational semantic repositories

  • Metadata

  • Information science

  • Ontology and Knowledge Engineering

  • Data service architectures

For this plenary, we are targeting members interested in contributing more actively to the activities of the Interest Group. As we will discuss the possibility to create a new Working Group on the FAIR Semantics recommendations, we would encourage participants to read the latest version of the recommendations: https://zenodo.org/record/4314321.

Brief introduction describing the activities and scope of the group:

The aim of the VSSIG is to provide a platform to discuss and investigate ways to advance and harmonize practices in the design and the publication of semantic artifacts (i.e. controlled vocabularies, thesauri, ontologies,...). The VSSIG is currently composed of 1 Working group and 3 Task Groups,  focusing on various aspects of ontologies and ontology services (FAIR semantics of repositories, ontology metadata, governance, ontology mappings, semantic service API interoperability, selecting terms and ontologies etc)

Short Group Status:

The group was established six years ago and constitutes a forum for semantic researchers and experts, operational semantic repository managers, ontologists etc. to connect and discuss issues and possible solutions, and share knowledge and latest developments in the domain.

The group has 221 members, many of them participating via Task Groups organized in Slack channels and on the group’s wiki page. One Task Group to date has formed an RDA Working Group. Activity in each Task Group is organised in zoom calls or is reflected by messages on each Slack channel. The group’s membership continues to grow rapidly.
