list of water data portals

Thanks Janet, this is a very useful compilation. Several folks on this list have participated in developing or maintaining such portals. I would be interested to convene a small subgroup under GWIIG to discuss best practices of water portal development, and general issues of water data discovery. I’d be happy to set up an initial online meeting on this if there is some support for this topic.
Some issues we could look at: what are water data discovery use cases and challenges (eg navigating across different granularity levels: water time series, samples, datasets, etc.); how to consistently describe water data portals and data discovery services – perhaps leveraging the Re3data schema and registry; interoperability across water data portals and services. There is a Data Discovery IG within RDA – we may also want to connect with them to see: a) how water data discovery use cases would complement their collection of discovery use cases, and b) how the general frameworks for data discovery they have been exploring would apply to our domain.

When we search Re3Data by subject == “water research”, we get 120 results. They all have descriptions and URLs - but some of them are not what we would call a water data portal per se. How do we define what a “water data portal” is? What types of water data portals are there (eg allowing search for time series? water samples? coverages? water-related publications and projects? supporting collaboration and data annotation?)
Another issue is how such a compilation of water data portals would be maintained and used. Using it for analysis of patterns and best practices would be great indeed. Janet, what was the initial scope of the compilation and how did you select portals for the list?

I am leading the development of http://www.hydroshare.org, a portal that was not on the list, though it does fall under CUAHSI. We are interested in advancing the sharing and discovery of water data.

Hi All, I’m sorry that I have started parallel threads (see attached) by not including a cc to the GWI IG list in the attached email. (This was an attempt to keep the email traffic focused, but it seems to have backfired.)
The short answer to Ilya’s question is that I started the list for my own information – I was mainly interested in understanding the diversity of available (water) data and data providers. I only recently found out about Zenodo and then I thought it would be nice to deposit the list there and let anyone who wanted to pick it up. I did not have very strict criteria for the data portals that I included except that I was looking mainly for long term records (i.e., monitoring rather than research) that focused on freshwater (as opposed to more general environmental) data.
I have also cc’d this to Philipp Saile (German Federal Institute of Hydrology, BfG, in Koblenz), who is responsible for the UNEP GEMStat water quality database (see http://www.waterandchange.org/en/#daten). As I mentioned in my parallel e-mail thread, Philipp created a GDoc version of the list (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/154rh-1xnWNGeew6X6txQwXR5tKLjzD8w...), which already includes some additional entries.
One option would be to create a Water Data Portal project in the Open Science Framework (https://osf.io/). I think that OSF is better designed and structured that Google docs (maybe Philipp has an opinion on this). Another option would be to set up a Slack team (https://slack.com/) – I have some colleagues who really like this but I have not used it myself.
Here are my summary thoughts:
n As far as I am concerned, anyone can use the list for anything he or she wants. It contains only information that is available on the web and the “added value” that I contributed is negligible and not worth bothering about.
n I did not make any serious effort to optimize the list. I used an alphabetical ordering, but even that was a bit awkward at times. I made no attempt to organize the list in any other way.
n As noted above, I did not give my criteria for inclusion much thought. That might be worthwhile.

How do we define what a “water data portal” is? What types of water data portals are there (eg allowing search for time series? water samples? coverages? water-related publications and projects? supporting collaboration and data annotation?)
Another issue is how such a compilation of water data portals would be maintained and used. Using it for analysis of patterns and best practices would be great indeed. Janet, what was the initial scope of the compilation and how did you select portals for the list?

Some issues we could look at: what are water data discovery use cases and challenges (eg navigating across different granularity levels: water time series, samples, datasets, etc.); how to consistently describe water data portals and data discovery services – perhaps leveraging the Re3data schema and registry; interoperability across water data portals and services. There is a Data Discovery IG within RDA – we may also want to connect with them to see: a) how water data discovery use cases would complement their collection of discovery use cases, and b) how the general frameworks for data discovery they have been exploring would apply to our domain.
Please email me if you’d be interested in discussing water data discovery further; perhaps we can connect over skype next week to see if there is sufficient interest in joining forces.

Among GWIIG co-chairs we’ve been discussing potential topics that would be common for this group, and would generate focused discussions. The topics we’ve discussed include: dynamic data citation (there is already work going on on this), hydrologic data discovery and catalogs, vocabularies for water data, linked data in hydrology (please suggest additional topics). On each of these themes, there is one or more RDA technical working group or interest group, with which we (as a domain-focused group) could coordinate. So I am very grateful to Janet for raising the portals and data discovery topic – and especially pointing to this initial useful compilation. Indeed, if there is sufficient interest among members (thanks Dave Tarboton for voicing support and readiness to participate!), we could convene a small sub-group to define what we want to accomplish together (eg use cases and requirements for water data discovery; assessment of existing portals and best practices; compilation of technologies and schemas, etc.), prepare for the next RDA plenary; perhaps join forces with the Data Discovery IG on a joint webinar for hydrologists.
I’d like to gauge everybody’s interest in such groups – and for this I am going to be a little cavalier and include some names already:

Hi All, I’m sorry that I have started parallel threads (see attached) by not including a cc to the GWI IG list in the attached email. (This was an attempt to keep the email traffic focused, but it seems to have backfired.)
The short answer to Ilya’s question is that I started the list for my own information – I was mainly interested in understanding the diversity of available (water) data and data providers. I only recently found out about Zenodo and then I thought it would be nice to deposit the list there and let anyone who wanted to pick it up. I did not have very strict criteria for the data portals that I included except that I was looking mainly for long term records (i.e., monitoring rather than research) that focused on freshwater (as opposed to more general environmental) data.
I have also cc’d this to Philipp Saile (German Federal Institute of Hydrology, BfG, in Koblenz), who is responsible for the UNEP GEMStat water quality database (see http://www.waterandchange.org/en/#daten). As I mentioned in my parallel e-mail thread, Philipp created a GDoc version of the list (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/154rh-1xnWNGeew6X6txQwXR5tKLjzD8w...), which already includes some additional entries.
One option would be to create a Water Data Portal project in the Open Science Framework (https://osf.io/). I think that OSF is better designed and structured that Google docs (maybe Philipp has an opinion on this). Another option would be to set up a Slack team (https://slack.com/) – I have some colleagues who really like this but I have not used it myself.
Here are my summary thoughts:
n As far as I am concerned, anyone can use the list for anything he or she wants. It contains only information that is available on the web and the “added value” that I contributed is negligible and not worth bothering about.
n I did not make any serious effort to optimize the list. I used an alphabetical ordering, but even that was a bit awkward at times. I made no attempt to organize the list in any other way.
n As noted above, I did not give my criteria for inclusion much thought. That might be worthwhile.

When we search Re3Data by subject == “water research”, we get 120 results. They all have descriptions and URLs - but some of them are not what we would call a water data portal per se. How do we define what a “water data portal” is? What types of water data portals are there (eg allowing search for time series? water samples? coverages? water-related publications and projects? supporting collaboration and data annotation?)
Another issue is how such a compilation of water data portals would be maintained and used. Using it for analysis of patterns and best practices would be great indeed. Janet, what was the initial scope of the compilation and how did you select portals for the list?

Thanks Janet, this is a very useful compilation. Several folks on this list have participated in developing or maintaining such portals. I would be interested to convene a small subgroup under GWIIG to discuss best practices of water portal development, and general issues of water data discovery. I’d be happy to set up an initial online meeting on this if there is some support for this topic.
Some issues we could look at: what are water data discovery use cases and challenges (eg navigating across different granularity levels: water time series, samples, datasets, etc.); how to consistently describe water data portals and data discovery services – perhaps leveraging the Re3data schema and registry; interoperability across water data portals and services. There is a Data Discovery IG within RDA – we may also want to connect with them to see: a) how water data discovery use cases would complement their collection of discovery use cases, and b) how the general frameworks for data discovery they have been exploring would apply to our domain.

Hi Janet and everybody,
Among GWIIG co-chairs we’ve been discussing potential topics that would be common for this group, and would generate focused discussions. The topics we’ve discussed include: dynamic data citation (there is already work going on on this), hydrologic data discovery and catalogs, vocabularies for water data, linked data in hydrology (please suggest additional topics). On each of these themes, there is one or more RDA technical working group or interest group, with which we (as a domain-focused group) could coordinate. So I am very grateful to Janet for raising the portals and data discovery topic – and especially pointing to this initial useful compilation. Indeed, if there is sufficient interest among members (thanks Dave Tarboton for voicing support and readiness to participate!), we could convene a small sub-group to define what we want to accomplish together (eg use cases and requirements for water data discovery; assessment of existing portals and best practices; compilation of technologies and schemas, etc.), prepare for the next RDA plenary; perhaps join forces with the Data Discovery IG on a joint webinar for hydrologists.
I’d like to gauge everybody’s interest in such groups – and for this I am going to be a little cavalier and include some names already:
Dynamic data citation (Matt, Sylvain +??)
Hydrologic data discovery and catalogs (Janet, Dave, Ilya, Philipp + ??)
Vocabularies for water data (Tony, Ilya + ??)
Linked data in hydrology (Dave Blodgett and Sylvain are working on ELFIE – see Sylvain’s message just now).
Everybody – please add your names (and/or additional themes), and then we’ll schedule first telecons.

Hi All, I’m sorry that I have started parallel threads (see attached) by not including a cc to the GWI IG list in the attached email. (This was an attempt to keep the email traffic focused, but it seems to have backfired.)
The short answer to Ilya’s question is that I started the list for my own information – I was mainly interested in understanding the diversity of available (water) data and data providers. I only recently found out about Zenodo and then I thought it would be nice to deposit the list there and let anyone who wanted to pick it up. I did not have very strict criteria for the data portals that I included except that I was looking mainly for long term records (i.e., monitoring rather than research) that focused on freshwater (as opposed to more general environmental) data.
I have also cc’d this to Philipp Saile (German Federal Institute of Hydrology, BfG, in Koblenz), who is responsible for the UNEP GEMStat water quality database (see http://www.waterandchange.org/en/#daten). As I mentioned in my parallel e-mail thread, Philipp created a GDoc version of the list (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/154rh-1xnWNGeew6X6txQwXR5tKLjzD8w...), which already includes some additional entries.
One option would be to create a Water Data Portal project in the Open Science Framework (https://osf.io/). I think that OSF is better designed and structured that Google docs (maybe Philipp has an opinion on this). Another option would be to set up a Slack team (https://slack.com/) – I have some colleagues who really like this but I have not used it myself.
Here are my summary thoughts:
n As far as I am concerned, anyone can use the list for anything he or she wants. It contains only information that is available on the web and the “added value” that I contributed is negligible and not worth bothering about.
n I did not make any serious effort to optimize the list. I used an alphabetical ordering, but even that was a bit awkward at times. I made no attempt to organize the list in any other way.
n As noted above, I did not give my criteria for inclusion much thought. That might be worthwhile.

I am leading the development of http://www.hydroshare.org, a portal that was not on the list, though it does fall under CUAHSI. We are interested in advancing the sharing and discovery of water data.

When we search Re3Data by subject == “water research”, we get 120 results. They all have descriptions and URLs - but some of them are not what we would call a water data portal per se. How do we define what a “water data portal” is? What types of water data portals are there (eg allowing search for time series? water samples? coverages? water-related publications and projects? supporting collaboration and data annotation?)
Another issue is how such a compilation of water data portals would be maintained and used. Using it for analysis of patterns and best practices would be great indeed. Janet, what was the initial scope of the compilation and how did you select portals for the list?

Hi Ilya and everybody,
I would be interested to contribute to a "vocabularies for water data"
sub-group. I have just started to work on an ontology that should
support annotating datasets produced by Eawag ("aquatic research").
Hoping that this could eventually become a collaborative project I put
that on osf.io: https://osf.io/fzm6p (at the moment it is really just a
collection of potentially useful ontologies).
