RE: Transportation WG Case Statement

Groups audience:

Hello colleagues,
I hope to meet many of you at this week's RDA plenary. I'm looking forward to relaunching engagement on for the proposed RDA Transportation Data WG. Specifically, I want to identify the key stakeholders and next steps in problem identification. We have a short slot during the Geospatial interest Group meeting on day 1 where we can begin the discussion. There is a call-in number for remote participation. I also will make time to meet with with anyone who is interested in the Transportation Data WG on the side of the other events at RDA this week. Please reach out if you want to sit and discuss. For those not at RDA, I'd like to have similar discussions remotely. Again, please reach out if you'd like to talk with me about the Transportation Data WG.
Thank you to both Anita and Vassilis for the feedback on the discussion about the transportation WG.
Vassilis described his experiences with other RDA WGs, and suggested we reach out directly to large research groups/consortia using or generating transportation data in different national or regional contexts. Interviewing them about their experiences with transportation data will help us to identify and define the problem to be solved by the WG and find collaborators.
Anita is looking for longer-term collaborations, inside or outside of RDA. Anita - FYI, though working groups are meant to be focused on a problem that is solvable within less than 2 years, there are other mechanisms for longer engagements, such as the interest group (IG) designation. I have a professional interest in your topic and will reach out as well.
Talk to many of you next week.

Subject: Transportation WG Case Statement
Dear Transportation Data WG colleagues,
Several people have expressed interest in developing an RDA working group on transportation data. We'd like to move the transportation WG forward at the upcoming Plenary.
As a reminder: working groups are formed as short-term (12-18 month), focused efforts with tangible progress, completing actions that will improve open sharing of data for a particular community or group of stakeholders. Standards, tools or practices and their uptake by stakeholders is expected. The next step in the process is developing a case statement for the group, for acceptance by RDA.
We are at the stage of identifying the problems faced by the transportation research data community. I have shared the draft case statement with a number of researchers and asked them to add their ideas, but this has not resulted in ideas contributed. I think we need to engage the community in another way. I would propose starting with some one-on-one phone calls to discuss ideas with key stakeholders, or a conference call to the extent that we can get a group together.
At the RDA plenary, I'd like to reengage those interested in a transportation WG, and plan how to engage the community to identify the vision, the problem(s), and the mission of the WG on transportation data.
Looking forward to hearing your ideas about how best to engage the community to identify transportation research data problems and solutions for the WG to develop. Please forward to interested parties, and reach out to me with any questions or ideas. Thank you.

    Hi Beth
We are doing research on cycling data and public transport movement data using smart card data and smart phone apps.
    See Cityviz

If this ties into your proposed working group would be happy to be involved. However, unfortunately I cannot make Barcelona for RDA this time.
    Regards,
    Chris
