Mahadia Tunga is a Tanzania Data Lab (dLab) (www.dlab.or.tz) co-founder, a center of excellence for data science and data-driven innovation that was initially established with funding from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and US Presidential Emergency Funds for HIV/AIDS Relief(PEFAR). In charge of the firm’s data science, research and capacity development section, Mahadia has been instrumental in dLab’s ability to leverage partnerships with the University of Dar es Salaam, Stanford University, University of Virginia, and George Mason University to spearhead collaborative research, consulting, gender-based programs and training on data science. As a Business Analyst, she has worked on the requirement gathering, analysis, and design of various software systems such as Local Government Human Resource Information System for President Office, Regional Administration, Afya Care for hospitals under local government authority in Tanzania, Planning, Budgeting and Monitoring System (PBMS) for Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Private Public Partnership Database for Ministry of Health Tanzania, etc. As a training consultant, she has developed an online and face-to-face data science curriculum for dLab and trained over 5000 individuals and 100 organizations in Tanzania, Uganda, Congo, South Africa, Cairo, Kenya, Ethiopia, Zambia, Somalia, Djibouti, etc. She is also actively involved in dLab’s partnership with the National Bureau of Statistics to strengthen Tanzania’s national data ecosystem. Mahadia’s exemplary research skills, data science expertise, and management have helped dLab successfully develop over 240 data science products and services, generate over 70,000 data points, and manage 14 data-driven innovation projects. She has delivered strategic consultancies with various organizations such as Cambridge Education, International Research & Exchanges Board(IREX), UNFPA/Community Systems Foundation (CSF), World Bank, Open Data Institute (ODI) African Monitor, IntraHealth International, and Web Foundation.
