With the recent report ‘Turning FAIR data into reality’, CoreTrustSeal (CTS) is playing an increasingly prominent role in the ecosystem of generating and serving FAIR data. This webinar will introduce the Trustworthy concept and data repository certifications including CTS.

About CoreTrustSeal

CoreTrustSeal (http://www.coretrustseal.org) offers certification for data repositories based on the CoreTrustSeal Data Repositories Requirementscatalogue and procedures. CoreTrustSeal sets overarching criteria that embrace the prior standards of World Data System (WDS) and the Data Seal of Approval (DSA), as well as the ISO 16363 and DIN 31644 standards. Those standards of Trustworthy Data Repositories are to ensure long-term services to provide data complying with the FAIR principles of Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. Since September 2017, CoreTrustSeal has certified over 50 repositories worldwide (predominantly from the social sciences and humanities, with increasing uptake from life sciences) and thus is a key component of the emerging infrastructure for open, data-centric science.

CoreTrustSeal works with candidate repositories to meet 16 Requirements that will ensure they are persistent trustworthy sources of data and data services. The Requirements reflect the mission focused on data provision and preservation, appropriate expert staffing levels, technical infrastructure, governance, and guaranteed continuance. Candidate repositories must have documented workflows from ingestion to dissemination; curatorial practices that secure the integrity and authenticity of the data; and apply the most suitable licensing, confidentiality, and ethical practices for their domains. They must show that they have appropriate metadata management and archival functions, be open to review and able to evolve (see https://www.coretrustseal.org/why-certification/requirements/).

What will you learn

This webinar will provide an introduction to the importance and benefits of repository certification in the context of highlighting the prominent roles of data repositories in enabling data FAIR. Participants will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the CoreTrustSeal certification requirements and procedures, gaining a better understanding of the necessary steps for certification, and how compliance with documented criteria may be met. CoreTrustSeal experts with a background in the Life Sciences will report on their experiences with CoreTrustSeal certification of a few certified biomedical data repositories and answer certification-related questions.
