'RDM, from Strategy to Impact: What you need is an infrastructure (people & technology) and a mind shift.'

3 discussions on 9, 16, 23 March 2023 at 13:00 UTC

Increasingly, research data sharing is required by funders, publishers and government strategic agendas. In response, institutions are ramping up their research data management (RDM) efforts, but there are a lot of questions to address before getting started and during implementation. And for those organizations who have already invested time and resources into an RDM—how can it better meet the institution’s needs? Glean insights from practitioners and experts who planned, customized and implemented their institutional RDMs…with success. All seminars are offered at 13:00 UTC, conducted in English and have a duration of 50 minutes. Attending the webinars is free of charge.

Further details and registration.

Upcoming Birds of a Feather Session:
"Introducing Innovative Indicators to Track Sweden's Open Research Data Objective: How to measure progress? Defining indicators to track Open Research Data across Swedish Universities"

22 March 2023 at 08:00-09:30 UTC, part of RDA Plenary 20 in Gothenburg, Sweden

Sweden has set an ambitious objective to make all their research data open by 2026. In order to achieve this, there needs to be individual and institutional behavior changes and a framework to track these changes and progress. The Swedish National Data Service, together with Stockholm University, Karolinska Institutet, Gothenburg University, and Elsevier have started initial discussions to identify the right indicators to track progress. In this workshop we will present the early results from the pilot project, including a framework of indicators that can be used to track progress. The pilot indicator data have been extracted from open metadata sources as well as from Elsevier's publication indexing. We will also demonstrate how these indicators can be used to identify gaps and challenges in the current data sharing practices. In addition, practical insights arising from the project will be discussed, as well as opportunities and challenges that this effort presents. Participants will have the opportunity to join the discussion and share their own experiences with similar initiatives.

Speakers: Max Petzold, Head of School of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of Gothenburg, Director Swedish National Data Service; Merlijn de Smit, Data Steward, Stockholm University

Group updates:

Update from the RDA Funders Forum

The Research Data Alliance (RDA) Funders Forum initiated around the launch of the RDA in 2013, is a group of funding organisations / representatives with an interest in research data and related data policies. Participation in the Funders Forum is not limited to current funders of the RDA, and is open to all funding agencies and organisations, both public and private, with an interest to attend and actively contribute.

The RDA Funders Forum is chaired and co-ordinated by representatives from funding agencies directly. Since 2017, the Funders Forum has been co-chaired by Matthew Lucas Executive Director, Corporate Strategy and Performance, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and Joshua M. Greenberg, Director of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation's Digital Information Technology program

From 1 March 2023, Matthew will be joined by Dina N. Paltoo, Ph.D., M.P.H Assistant Director, Scientific Strategy and Innovation, Immediate Office of the Director (IOD), National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institutes of Health (NIH).

We are delighted to have Dina join the forum and are so very grateful to Josh for his expertise, time and wonderful leadership of the Funders Forum for many years. Matthew continues to support this very important group of stakeholders.

There are currently few forums for research funders engaged in the open research and data management space to discuss their unique challenges, perspectives and opportunities. Creating a forum for research funders to initiate or further data-related discussions results in lasting benefits for the research community (increased coordination, standardization and support) and the funders themselves in terms of avoiding duplication of efforts and building on existing expertise and resources.

The next meeting of the RDA Funders Forum, takes place on 20 March 2023 in Gothengurg, Sweden in conjunction with the Research Data Alliance 20th Plenary meeting. Participation is open to all funding agencies but subject to registration
