Meeting objectives:

Given section 4.3.4 within the recent report from the RDA Council’s Strategic Plan for 2020-2023, “The work of RDA has the potential to add substantial value to conversations such as the climate change effort, by enabling cooperation between sectors and regions in the service of the SDGs.” In reflecting on the proposed Strategic Plan in combination from feedback throughout previous plenaries and co-chair meetings, we would like to hold working meetings during which RDA members can begin proposing and actively progressing some of the major takeaways and potential next steps on SDG work. Previously proposed outputs are as follows:

--Create adoption/output portfolio for the stakeholders working actively with SDG data

Such a portfolio could be a brief summary of RDA-alignment with the SDG work and some educational materials, such as a webinar, describing how RDA outputs could be applicable to social and technical issues surrounding work in the SDGs. We'd also thought featuring testimonials of people working in the SDGs who recognize the RDA's benefit or have used RDA outputs in past within their work would be beneficial. We're in contact with members of the RDA summers schools and education for librarians IG who are well-experienced in crafting similar portfolios for targeted audiences, but any guidance you could offer in how such a portfolio could be impactful would be more than welcome.

The aim of the meeting agenda is two-fold:

1) Present activities ongoing within the RDA that could align with the SDGs, including survey and mapping results

2) Engage RDA organizational and community members in defining and actively progressing proposed group outputs

Brief introduction describing the activities and scope of the group:

In previous Plenaries the Data for Development IG has focused on the need of data to solve major issues of concern to in particular developing countries such as poverty, inequality, education, gender which are all also SDG targets. The sUAS group has focused on data challenges related to new and emerging technologies, many outcomes of which are relevant for data collection for the SDGs. Discussions within The Health Data IG have been highly productive surrounding health and clinical informatics and use of large electronic health record data, as well as related topics of patient and data privacy. Work underway within the RDA secretariat has focused on how RDA outputs and recommendations can be disseminated and packaged to support efforts of other organizations or community development initiatives. Such efforts include increasing organizational collaboration and integration of RDA outputs within education curricula, directly aligning with the mission of the UN interoperability collaborative. The RDA summers schools and education for librarians IG is well-experienced in crafting portfolios for targeted audiences, and will share as a part of this joint session.

Short Group Status:

The RDA for the SDG IG has had consistent discussions with RDA Council members to align the activities of our group with their proposed strategy for 2020-2023. Up to date, the group has conducted a tentative mapping of RDA WGs, Outputs, Recommendations, and Adoption case-studies to the 17 SDG goals. We would like to gain more direct feedback from organizational and community members to evaluate this mapping demonstrating the alignment of RDA for the SDGs, as well as collaboratively develop strategic nexts-steps to build upon and expand this current work to best frame the value of the RDA for the SDGs. Previous sessions have been well-attended, demonstrating the community interest and cross-sector data needs for the SDGs.
