RRIDs: A Way to Track Samples Through the Scientific Literature

Date:
10 Aug 2021 - 19:00 to 20:00 UTC

The second webinar in this series will outline how RRIDs (Research Resource ID’s), persistent identifiers used to track key biological resources, i.e., "physical samples" for the biomedical field, successfully drove improvements in resource identification. It will highlight lessons learned, and how any research field could learn from the challenges that the RRID project faced in implementing RRID’s. Particularly the successful adoption of RRIDs by publishers and the research community is of interest to anyone interested in persistent identifiers.

Exploring Past, Present, and Future Outcomes of the RDA Libraries for Research Data (L4RD) Interest Group

Date:
28 Jun 2021 - 13:00 to 14:00 UTC

Watch the Recording here

This 1-hour webinar will explore outcomes from the RDA Libraries for Research Data (L4RD) Interest Group with presentations describing the initiatives that developed the outcomes, the impact they have made, and will also explore related initiatives that have benefited from these outcomes. There will be time for Q&A in the latter part of the webinar and an opportunity to explore the current and future outcomes of the Interest Group.

Supporting Reproducibility by Capturing Physical Sample Data and Metadata in a Connected Electronic Lab Notebook

Date:

RDA/ESIP Physical Samples Webinar Series.  This webinar will provide an overview of the problem from a researcher’s point of view and present a case study of the kinds of problems created by inadequate sample tracking and the lack of workable alternatives for associating samples with the experimental record. The new Inventory module being developed for the RSpace electronic lab notebook allows sample data to be associated with other experimental data and the experimental record, and sample data to be accessed and managed from within the ELN side of the application. Through integrations with repositories like Dataverse and Figshare, data from RSpace, and these other tools the sample data and the experimental data it’s associated with can be deposited together directly into the repositories, where it can be accessed and queried by others, facilitating reproducibility.

Versioning Data Is About More than Revisions: A Conceptual Framework and Proposed Principles

Date:
27 May 2021 - 23:00 UTC

Recording Available Here

This 1-hour webinar will address the issue of a lack of a consistent framework and agreed definitions of best practices across data communities in guiding the management of data versioning,  including the citation and identification of different versions of a data set. The talk will introduce six foundational principles for versioning of datasets: Revision, Release, Granularity, Manifestation, Provenance and Citation which were derived from the collection and analysis of 39 use cases and current practices of data versioning across 33 organisations, and used the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) as a conceptual framework. The six principles provide a high-level framework for researchers in guiding a consistent practice of data versioning and can also serve as guidance for data centres or data providers when setting up their own data revision and version protocols and procedures, as well as systematic identification of their data products.

RDA for Newcomers Sessions - April 2021

Date:
13 Apr 2021 - 16:00 UTC to 19 Apr 2021 - 14:30 UTC

The aim of these sessions is to help participants who are new to RDA understand more about how RDA works, assist them in navigating the Virtual Plenary 17 and provide an opportunity for networking.

We will run three virtual sessions to accommodate different time zones.

RDA for Newcomers VP17 sessions are planned for:

Connecting Data, Institutions and People: FAIR Digital Objects, RDA outputs and the design of the DiSSCo Research Infrastructure

Date:
18 Mar 2021 - 18:00 to 19:00 UTC
Organiser:

RDA-US - 2021 Webinar Series Highlighting RDA Outputs

Presenters:

Sharif Islam, Ph.D., Data Architect, DiSSCo//Naturalis Biodiversity Center, The Netherlands

Dr. Islam is a Data Architect for DiSSCo (Distributed System for Scientific Collections) -- a new pan-European research infrastructure project to work with European museums and natural science collections to create a data-driven research infrastructure to mobilise, unify and deliver bio - and geo-diversity information. His background is in designing, implementing, and managing various large-scale and distributed mission-critical systems, services, and applications.

Webinar Recording

This webinar will address how the Distributed System of Scientific Collections (DiSSCo) --- a new European Research Infrastructure currently in the preparation phase -- is working towards transforming a fragmented landscape of the natural science collections into an integrated data infrastructure. The talk will provide an overview of the architectural design of DiSSCo, focusing on the adoption of FAIR Digital Object and the incorporation of multiple RDA Group outputs.  It will highlight the benefits of this approach to the goal of connecting data, institutions, and people. This endeavour not only includes the data element, but institutions of varying sizes and capacities, and the people curating, maintaining, and using the collections and the data.
