Managing and sharing data effectively requires a significant investment from research communities and data service providers. Effort needs to be allocated to plan and execute data management activities such as creating data documentation and preparing data for deposit. Resources also need to be committed to ensure appropriate services are in place and required allocations are made. Read more.

RDA Pathway To Open Science In Europe: The Impact Of RDA Solutions And National Nodes At The OS Fair Workshop. 6-18 September 2019, Porto, Portugal 

From 16 to 18 September 2019 the Open Science Fair in Porto will critically showcase the elements required for the transition to Open Science. The RDA will actively contribute to the workshop’s agenda with four sessions facilitated by RDA Working Groups and RDA Europe partners focusing on FAIR Data management, national plans for implementing the EOSC and services supporting research data. Responsible Conduct Of Research For HUM, PhD Programme at the Faculty of Humanities at University of Southern Denmark

Module 3: Research data management: Research data in the context of the humanities could be derived or compiled resulting from processing or combining 'raw' data (e.g., text and data mining, compiled databases), and/or they could also be reference or canonical meaning a static or organic conglomeration or collection of datasets, probably published and curated (e.g., collection of letters, archive of historical images). Social Sciences Research Data Interest Group Endorsed by Council 

This new interest group will foster diverse professional exchange on issues particular to data originating from the social sciences and humanities. Its goal is to coordinate communications across the various current RDA groups of interest and provide a place for members to share solutions and concerns with others in these fields.  Read more.

FAIRsFAIR Open Consultation on FAIR Data Policies and Practices in Europe - Please Share your Views!

The H2020 funded FAIRsFAIR project "Fostering FAIR Data Practices In Europe” runs from March 2019 to February 2022. It will offer practical solutions for implementing FAIR data principles, with a focus on fostering a FAIR data culture and promoting good practices. These surveys are part of the FAIRsFAIR project to assess the current landscape and to develop recommendations to enable and promote FAIR policies and practices. Organisational Member Spotlight - Norwegian Centre for Research Data (NSD) 

NSD is a national research infrastructure. Although NSD’s academic center of gravity lies in Norwegian Social Science Research, NSD operates in accordance with its multi- and interdisciplinary mandate. Its principal objectives are to ensure free and open access to research data and improve conditions for performing empirical research by providing an extensive range of data and support services. As a key player in the development of Nordic, European and international research infrastructure NSD will both contribute to and benefit from the work of RDA through our involvement as an organizational member. Member Spotlight - Dr. Andrew Janke, Associate Director, Research Technology, University of Sydney

This month we spoke with Dr. Andrew Janke, the Associate Director of Research Technology at the University of Sydney. 

We asked Andrew to describe the value of RDA for him: 'What's valuable about RDA is that it's a good place to broaden your horizons. [..] RDA allowed me to be in a room with other people, even virtually, who have the same problem in very different fields; very quickly you learn that you are all wasting time to solve the same problem individually. [...] RDA makes virtual attendance very easy and I continue to attend remotely because it allows for a broad and very quick overview of all the experts across fields. This is great for someone in Australia, who doesn't get to go to many conferences, with most distances being a 24-hour flight.'  Read the full interview.

RDA and the Humanities - A Report from the RDA Europe Ambassador for the Humanities

The goal of this report is to provide a broad overview of the way RDA and the humanities as an academic discipline can be of value to each other. The intended audience for this report in the first instance are digital humanities researchers and service providers in the humanities domain. This analysis was done by René van Horik from the Data Archiving and Networked Services, in the Netherlands, the RDA Europe Ambassador for the Humanities, supported by the RDA Europe 4.0 project. The report is available here.

Adoption Grant Introductions - Template For Reproducible, Shareable And Archivable Data Analysis - by Ryan O'Connor
In December 2018, RDA Europe issued an open call for projects adopting outputs from the RDA’s various Working and Interest Groups. Following recommendations from external evaluators, eight funding grants were awarded in April 2019. This blog series will introduce the eight Adoption Grant cases, giving an overview of their project remits and demonstrating the practical approaches organisations can take when looking to implement the RDA’s Recommendations & Outputs.

The Greek Effect In Enhancing RDA Outputs Adoption - by Elli Papadopoulou 

On July 3, the Greek RDA Node, Athena Research Centre (ARC), organised a Workshop on RDA Outputs and Adoption to inform the Greek scientific community about the outcomes of RDA group activities and to provide useful instructions on how these outcomes could be applied by them to improve existing services, tools and workflows.  The workshop was held at ARC premises in Athens and was remotely available for everyone willing to participate. 

RDA in a Nutshell – August Statistics

Did you know RDA publishes a summary of community statistics each month? This summary provides a small glimpse into the growth of RDA. Highlights as of August 2019 are as follows:

• 8,810 individual members from 137 countries
• 87 groups working on global data interoperability challenges
• 50 organisational members and 9 affiliate members
• 32 flagship outputs and 75 adoption cases

RDA is delighted to announce its 15th Plenary Meeting will take place from 18 - 20 March 2020 in Melbourne, Australia. The event will be hosted by CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) with the support of the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC). The Plenary meeting will be organised in conjunction with the annual C3DIS (Collaborative Conference on Computational and Data Intensive Science). Mark the dates in your diary and check this page for updates.

RDA/U.S. Adoption Program: Call for Proposals

Applications are invited for the FY20 RDA/U.S. Adoption Program. The program provides support to integrate RDA Recommendations into existing data infrastructure environments. The goal is to better connect the global scale work of RDA with local needs and infrastructures to advance data-driven research and increase impact.

Support is available for up to 3 Adoption Teams. Each team will receive up to $40,000 (depending on budget) to support the work to incorporate RDA Recommendations into their environment over the period December 1, 2019 to June 1, 2020. Applications are due on October 1, 2019 and should be addressed to Jamie Lupo-Petta at lupopj@rpi.edu.

RDA Working Groups Solutions To DMP: Webinar Slides and Recording Now Available: 

The RDA Secretariat aims to promote the uptake of RDA Recommendations and Outputs across all regions. In this context, the RDA Secretariat is working on a series of webinars that aim to train stakeholders for adoption. The webinars will highlight outputs of RDA Interest and Working Groups and demonstrate the added value of RDA. The first webinar was titled Outputs to Support Reproducible Health Research.  This second webinar focused on RDA groups and outputs related to Data Management Plans. We aimed to highlight ongoing work in RDA from the perspectives of RDA Interest and Working Group chairs, facilitating discussion between the chairs and potential adopters of RDA Recommendations and Outputs.
