Virtual Plenary 17 Updates

Virtual Plenary 17 Opportunities for RDA Members

The session submission deadline for Virtual Plenary 17 passed earlier this week, and we are pleased to report that we received numerous proposals. The Technical Advisory Board is now reviewing them with the goal of sending notifications to groups by 26 February. Although we are no longer accepting session requests, the “Call for Posters” and “Call for Co-located Events” remain open.

Co-located Events – 12 February Deadline

Co-located events are an excellent way to convene an additional meeting either right before or after VP17, on Monday, 19 April 2021 or Friday, 23 April 2021.  This provides the opportunity to engage with the RDA community while leveraging the outreach initiatives taking place within RDA for VP17. Learn more at https://www.rd-alliance.org/rdas-17th-plenary-call-co-located-events.

Call for Posters – 26 March Deadline

The poster submission deadline is 26 March, and only requires you to submit an abstract. Notifications of acceptance will be sent the following week. Keep in mind, we require that your poster is uploaded to the conference platform by 12 April. Instructions will be provided on how to access the platform and upload the poster and related documents upon acceptance of your poster. Learn more at https://rd-alliance.org/rdas-17th-plenary-call-posters.

Sponsor Opportunities

Thank you to Springer Nature and GALE, a Cengage company, for their sponsorship of VP17. Additional opportunities are still available, so if your organisation is interested in learning more, view the various packages or tailor a package that fits your preferences. Learn more at https://www.rd-alliance.org/rdas-17th-plenary-sponsorship-opportunities.

Group updates:
  • New Groups: The Global Open Research Commons (GORC) Working Group
The GORC Working Group is in the initial phase of formation, with its Case Statement now available for the RDA Community to review and provide feedback. The Case Statement is open for comments through 8 February.

  • New Supporting Output from the FAIR Data Maturity Model Working Group
This report provides a consolidated view of the answers collected during a survey conducted in October 2020. This survey took place in the context of the work of the RDA FAIR Data Maturity Model Working Group and is aimed at investigating the differences of perspectives on benefits and challenges of the FAIR assessments between funders and research communities. The RDA Community is encouraged to provide comments on the report through 15 February.

  • RDA COVID-19 Adoption Survey
RDA and the RDA COVID-19 Working Group would like to assess the adoption and impact of its RDA COVID-19 Recommendations and Guidelines on Data Sharing, published on 30 June 2020. While we recognize the impact of the global pandemic across multiple domains and areas of practices, we are interested in learning the impact of this output for people and institutions conducting research and supporting data sharing and/or infrastructure across the clinical and public health domains. Please take a few minutes to share your output adoption experience by completing the brief survey.

Organisation Member Spotlight - AGU

Organisational membership is critical to the success of the Research Data Alliance (RDA), because organisations are instrumental in implementing the global data exchange systems that RDA enables. Organisational Members of the RDA (OMs) exercise considerable influence in the development of standards for data exchange and are seen as pioneers in realising the full value from research data. Unlocking value from research data is a key competitive advantage in the 21st century, and RDA and its members are at the heart of building this new economic model from exchanging research and scholarship data. Additional information on becoming an Organizational Member can be found here:

The AGU is an international non-profit scientific association with nearly 60,000 members. We are dedicated to the furtherance of the Earth and Space sciences, and to communicating our science’s ability to benefit humanity. AGU achieves these goals through publishing scientific journals and other technical publications, sponsoring scientific meetings, supporting education and outreach programs designed to increase public understanding of and support for our science, and a variety of other activities.

Providing incentives, community standards, and easy-to-use tools are some important factors for helping researchers embrace the FAIR Guidelines and support transparency and integrity. We would like to engage more closely with the RDA groups developing guidelines and recommendations for publishers and repositories that bring our community closer to common and best practices. With that goal in mind, AGU would like to contribute to, and benefit from, the work of the RDA.
