Meeting on Tuesday 20 February @ 14:00 UTC of the RDA/CODATA Data Systems, Tools, and Services for Crisis Situations (DTST) Working Group

20 Feb 2024

Dear RDA/CODATA Data Systems, Tools, and Services for Crisis Situations (DTST) Working Group Members,

Following on from our regular meeting last week on Monday 12 February, the co-chairs proposed two ‘extra discussions’ for this week to consider the development of a workplan for the DTST. In particular, the meetings are intended to

  1. Explore the DTST’s next steps;
  2. Examine how DTST members would like to contribute; and
  3. Explore in a preliminary way digital systems, tools, and services for crisis situations.

Today Jonathan Star and Erik Van Winkle joined me for over an to discuss these topics and generally share our views on the DTST and what might be accomplished.

In short, we discussed the importance of performing a landscaping of the current digital tools being used by major crisis institutions, appreciating their contributions, and seeing if there was a small area where a pilot ‘proof of concept’ contribution could be made.

We recognized the challenges in establishing a dialogue between policy and technologies, and the need to introduce new technologies in an environment where there is strong policy, ethics, and governance.

Tomorrow/today Wednesday 21 February @ 22:00 UTC a second meeting will be held for all those from the DTST interested and able to attend: https://zoom.us/j/95658996629?pwd=SXFrQ2k2QmUrUkhkNUF0ek9ubldkUT09  Meeting ID: 956 5899 6629; Passcode: 029163.

You can provide further input on the Jamboard by 18:00 UTC and we can also refer to this in our discussions.

Here too is a recording (Passcode: #22Hm$Hd) of a discussion we had with Erik during our last monthly meeting on Monday 12 February.

Our Co-chair Stefanie Kethers would like to notify you of a webinar on real-time tropical cyclone data for impact organised by Natural Hazard Research Australia this coming Tuesday 27 February 2024 at 00:00 UTC. This webinar is also expected to be recorded.

The RDA/CODATA DTSC Working Group meets monthly on the second Monday of the month from 08:00 to 09:00 UTC. The next meeting will be held on Monday 11 March. A calendar invitation for Zoom will be prepared. Please send me you e-mail address if you wish to receive the calendar invitation: fpc@gcpalliance.org

Kind regards,

Francis (RDA/CODATA DTSC Co-chair)

    Dear all,
I only wanted to mention that we spoke quite intensively during the last monthly call that we consider a triangle here: policy - technology - actors on the field (NGOs). Dialogue might not be sufficient.
This should be paralleled in the P22 session where we wanted the three groups represented in the presentation section.
I hope to see some of you in the next brainstorming session later on, I also attached a calendar invite if this can be useful for anyone.
    Best,
    Julien

Dear DSTS for Crisis Situations WG members,
The topic of the regular WG meetings has come up in discussions with co-chairs and WG members in the last few weeks. At present, the regular meeting takes place on the second Monday of the month @ 08:00UTC (i.e. the next meeting is scheduled for Monday 11 March, though I have yet to set up the calendar invite for this). However, this day of the month/time is not suitable for some.
To get a sense of whether there is a need for the regular meeting to be changed, and what times might be preferred, could you please fill out this Straw Poll indicating your preferences: https://strawpoll.com/e6Z28QWjMnN.
If you could all (including co-chairs) do this by this Thursday March 7 @ 10:00 UTC that would be appreciated; based on the responses I will then set up the next meeting.
    All the best,
Ryan (on behalf of WG co-chairs)
