Description

In this seminar series, you are hearing about many different metadata models and solutions, each tuned for specific engineering needs. Does this mean that interoperability is out of reach, and we face a world of stovepipe solutions and manual alignment A.D. (After Data)? Or can tooling simplify our road to interoperability, and even FAIRness? Is perfect metadata possible?

The Stanford Center for Biomedical Informatics Research builds software that enhances interoperability, particularly semantic interoperability. We think good metadata models are semantically meaningful and specify allowable controlled terms, to produce metadata that you, other people, and even computers more fully understand.

Toward that goal, BMIR created three free-to-use and widely adopted open source tools: Protégé, BioPortal, and CEDAR. Protégé helps create sophisticated terminologies (vocabularies and ontologies); BioPortal provides a community repository for terminologies from any domain; and CEDAR uses BioPortal to enable interoperable metadata pipelines.

Through real examples, this presentation will show how these tools' best practices and well-defined semantic standards make metadata easy: easy to model, easy for your users or systems to fill out, and easy to make (arguably) FAIR metadata. CEDAR quickly integrates community-developed (or custom-built!) terminologies to create a shareable metadata service that easily integrates with existing data systems.
