Hallo Ralph,
my first reaction is that we need to make use of the various use cases which already have been collected in the DFT WG, DFIG IG and probably others. It is quite some work for all parties to create the descriptions and to analyse them. Perhaps it is a good way to look at what is out there already (in DFT we had kind of 40 cases in total if I remember correctly) and then contact specific people to get more specific docs.
But let me also give you four hints:
- When building the DOBES Archive an extensive discussion took place which functions a rep system should have. At that time there was nothing like that, so we built our own. Now for sw maintenance reasons the archive seems to turn to Fedora commons. You could contact Paul Trilsbeek who is now in charge - he is in cc.
- The CLARIN community had an extensive discussion about repository systems and requirements. You may want to contact Dieter van Uytvanck and Thorsten Trippel - both in cc.
- In EUDAT we were confronted with many different systems which created a lot of problems in federating data. Important is that one has a difference in approach between the "big" centers and the "smaller" domain centers. A chat with Mark van de Sanden, Giuseppe Fiameni and Johannes Reetz (and possibly others) may be useful - also in cc.
- The most comprehensive work and developments I know of took place in the climate modelling community. Here you could contact Michael Lautenschlager. Also here you have the problem of large data sets probably requiring some special features - also in cc.
As far as I remember aspects of the repositories have been indicated in some descriptions that are in DFT and DF.
Best
Peter

Betreff: [rda-datafabric-ig] Use case and requirements gathering for research data repositories by Research Data Alliance IG
[Apologies if you receive this email through multiple channels]
Dear fellow RDA members,
On behalf of the Repository Platforms for Research Data Interest Group, I would like to invite you to submit use cases for research data repositories. The charter of this group is to "gather and analyze research data use cases in the context of repository platform requirements. The primary deliverable will be a matrix relating use cases with functional requirements for repository platforms." More details on the group and its work can be found at http://www.rd-alliance.org/groups/repository-platforms-research-data.html.
At https://www.rd-alliance.org/use-cases.html-3 you will find:
1.) A Microsoft Word template for describing a use case:
Template_UseCase_RepoPlat.docx
2.) Another Word file (Dissertation_UseCase_RepoPlat.docx) with an example of a completed use case, namely about a doctoral dissertation and its associated research data, which addresses concerns of the dissertation creator, their university, and potentially a funding agency.
3.) Already submitted use cases - as of this writing, there's one, on "Institutional Life-cycle Research Data Management" from the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour in Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
If you'd like to participate in this information gathering, please download the template mentioned in 1.), complete it with your use case and its associated requirements for a research data repository, and then either upload it to the collection at
https://www.rd-alliance.org/use-cases.html-3 (which requires logging in to the RDA site), or email it to me and I will upload it on your behalf.
The initial "deadline" for that is Sep. 15.
On Sep. 25, the Repository Platforms for Research Data IG will have a working meeting
(https://rd-alliance.org/ig-repository-platforms-research-data-p6-meeting...)
at the 6th Plenary of the Research Data Alliance (https://www.rd-alliance.org/plenary-meetings/rda-sixth-plenary-meeting.html),
which will include review of the use cases submitted by then. On Sep.
24, there will also be a joint meeting of the Libraries for Research Data, Long tail of research data and Repository Platforms for Research Data IGs (https://rd-alliance.org/ig-libraries-research-data-p6-joint-session.html).
Please don't hesitate to contact me and my fellow co-chairs with questions or comments.
