Groups audience:
Hello all,
I look forward to working with this group to try to encourage and facilitate adoption of identifiers for instruments. During the discussions I think some existing examples of metadata for instrument identifiers were mentioned. i think some of these were from DataCite…? If my memory is correct, it would be great to pull together these examples to identify good examples that might help us with guidance materials.

Hi,
I would like to enter into the conversation here. With RRIDs, which are enforced by at least some journals, there is an opportunity to have instruments IDs cited if they 'piggyback' on this mechanism. With DOIs from DataCite, it is great to do, but there is the notion of who asks authors to do that new task while they are publishing. That part is a difficult hurdle.

Looking at SciCrunch’s database in search of instruments https://scicrunch.org/scicrunch/Resources/search?q=*&facet[]=Resource%20... I get the impression that RRID does not have the granularity envisaged by this WG.
While RRID has some traction in the life sciences, it is unknown in e.g. the earth sciences. Perhaps different communities need different solutions. I am sure that the Enabling FAIR Project http://www.copdess.org/enabling-fair-data-project/enabling-fair-project-... would support the introduction of PID for instruments in the geosciences.

RRIDs are persistent unique identifiers for research resources, including
antibodies, cell lines, organisms, plasmids, and tools (broadly defined as
software projects or hardware) used in the conduct of a study.

The focus of RRIDs thus far, for tools, has been on software as opposed to
hardware, however two factors are driving me toward this group.
1. USEDIT group from is beginning to drive scientific hardware additions
(mostly by way of core facilities and purchasing at FSU)
2. RRID authors are registering instruments with us
