Need your feedback

10 Nov 2014

Dear All,
the 13 and 14 November I will participate to a 2-days workshop with many
other RDA working groups chairs. The goal of the workshop is to have a
detailed update from and a focused discussion among the working groups.
For this meeting, the discussions will focus on metadata. I should give
a 20 minutes presentation to explain what our working group is doing,
where we are and what possible inter-relations we could have with other
working groups. I am writing to you to have your feedback on the
presentation I prepared. I would apreciate any suggestion or comment.
Thank you in advance.
Best,
Esther

    Dear Esther,
I think the survey collects and explains very well the work done so far in the WG, congratulations!
My two cents are only about:
    - It might be that people attending the meeting will need a more introductory explanation of the WG as it is, e.g. the context and why this expected outputs are needed, especially with regard to the current heterogeneous situation of vocabularies, syntax and formats used by the data types. Maybe you can introduce that in the first slide.
    - if you do not have enough time for the presentation, I would reduce and cancel the slide 4 with a line in the slide 3 saying that the goal is to use RDF, the benefits of using RDF might be well known by the audience. Or to say something like currently: the formats used by these data types are various and a common framework in RDF could provide lots of benefits ... (at least when it can be used as such)
    - I would add something about the fact that there are cases where metadata for datasets must be defined, and therefore interactions with the metadata IG are needed. You have added that in the last slide, but I would introduce the issue about the metadata in an earlier slide, maybe before the one with the results of the workshop. This slide should contain a summary of the situation of these data types today specifically issues with 1.) definition of metadata for datasets 2.) metadata related to specific software, not necessarily a standard de facto 3.) metadata about data. So the three levels: properties, structures and formats.
Hope it helps and lots of luck in the workshop!
    All the best,
    Imma

    Dear Esther,
Thank you for sharing your presentation, I think it looks excellent.
I agree with Imma's suggestions about the intro slide and the RDF info
on slide 4 and the importance of the metadata.
Slide 9 ('Survey Participants')- suggest a more informative title, as it
was not explicit. Suggest: "Research areas of Survey Participants"
Couple of very small grammatical comments: -
    - suggest 'genome annotations' - rather than 'genomic annotations'
    -'germplasms' should be singular
    - typo on slide 3 ('mecanism')
Also needs a statement about what the next steps are?
Good luck at the meeting and enjoy,
    Best, Laurel

    you.
Please find enclosed the version I will present today in the afternoon.
Surely not perfect but hopefully more complete and clear.
